Asst. Prof. Ts. Dr. Irina Safitri Zen, CSO

Assistant Professor Ts. Dr. Irina Safitri Zen is a renowned lecturer and researcher at the Urban and Regional Planning Department, Kuliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She holds a B.Sc. in Ecology and Conservation, along with an M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Management from the National University of Malaysia. Her expertise lies in sustainability and climate change, where she has made significant contributions in both academia and practical implementation.
She has secured over USD 777,000 in research grants across 29 projects and received numerous accolades, including international recognition at the Seoul International Invention Fair and from the Korea Invention News. In 2015, she was named one of the top 20 women in Malaysia promoting sustainable development by the MIT UTM Sustainable Cities Program. She was just named one of IIUM’s top researchers for joint publication (2019–21) and the IIUM’s High Impact Responsible Innovation Awards (Arts & Social Science) in 2021.
Dr. Irina’s research focuses on sustainable development, environmental management, and climate change governance. She has developed UNESCO-recognized online masterclass courses on sustainable development and has spearheaded sustainability leadership programs in Cambodia, Bali, and Johor, Malaysia.
Notably, she served as a Science Advisor for Malaysia Green Technology Corporation (2017-2019) and was a member of the Leadership Council of the Malaysia Sustainable Development Solution Network (SDSN) under the Prime Minister’s Office in 2017.
Currently, Dr. Irina leads a collaborative research project with Okayama University and contributes to national sustainability initiatives, including the Melaka Climate Action Plan. As a registered environmental technologist and certified sustainability officer, she also chairs the Working Group on Atmospheric and Environmental Technology under the Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT). Her dedication to sustainability continues to make a profound impact both locally and globally.
